Lord, will only a few be saved?
This a good question, isn’t it? And one we all want, and need, an answer to. Even Jesus thought it was a good question. In essence the answer Jesus gave was, ‘It’s up to you, how much do you want to enter the kingdom of heaven?’ Jesus lays out the criteria for entering his kingdom. The first is that it will take some considerable effort on our part. The second is that it will be through a narrow door, and finally, we need to act like members of the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus gives us advice, not demands on how to live our lives. The first thing is to realise that we don’t know when God the Father is going to decide to bolt the door, so we shouldn’t delay any of our efforts. The second word of wisdom is that staying at the acquaintance level of relationship with Jesus is not enough. It is very easy to eat and drink a meal with someone, and yet not become committed to them. It is very easy to listen to good teaching, and yet not commit to putting it into practice.
