Cost of Commitment

The words of Jesus today are shocking to our ears and would have been an attention grabber in Matthew’s day as well. However, in the Semitic mind of the time, the community would have understood Christ’s bold statement to be a message about commitment, observing priorities, and allegiance. In other words, God must be first in our lives. The crowds that followed Jesus around were not really committed. They were simply curious to see if this person who called Himself the “Son of Man” was the real thing. He wants to awaken half-hearted followers to the consequences of not being prepared for the task of following His teachings.
